Brazilian sugar production slows down early termination cane crushing

The harvest of sugarcane in south-central Brazil, the largest producing region, is further slowed in late November after nearly half wits season ended early because of the dry climate, said Thursday the industry association Unica.

The mills in the region produced 762,200 tons of sugar in the second half of November compared to 1.2 million tonnes in the first half of last month. In the second part of November last year, the mills produced 1.4 million tonnes of the sweetener.

Unica said that 136 of the 289 mills operating in the region and closed their plants for the season, nearly a month before the usual end of the period of grinding in late December.
